Intel Pentium III : Privacy Issues: In the modern,
computer
generated world, advancement in technology are not unusual - it
is expected. In late January, 1999, Intel Corp. released its
enhanced graphics and multimedia chip, code-named Katmai,
will be formally known as the Pentium III. In a second
announcement, Intel stated its plans to add a new security
feature to its Pentium III line: an embedded ID/serial number in
each chip. The ID number will more accurately identify the
system owner and offer greater protection. The ID chips were
designed in an effort to address anti theft and anti fraud
concerns, and the growing security issues surrounding
e-commerce. There's been so much uproar over the potential
for privacy infringement that Intel says it will provide software
for users to mm off the serial number. The concern about
privacy is real, though it may be being blown out of proportion.
Intel has not dealt directly with the problem and seems intent on
maintaining it's position that the chip can be disabled sufficiently
with the software they provide. As of yet, they have not
addressed the concerns that another program could re-activate
the system and, or, it is completely disabled by their software.
This 5 page paper examines the concern over privacy.
