Introduction The first thing the student  writing about one of Rita Doves poems is that this poet is a woman who possesses a true passion and voice for writing. She resists poetic ideology in all its  forms, believing that a poem is what it is outside of the framework of what makes a "proper" poem. She makes it clear that she believes that the individual mind  of a person must be engaged to discover the truth and meaning within any piece of poetry, instead to trying to make it fit some pre-determined mold. She also served  as Americas poet laureate between 1993 and 1995. She was, at age 40, the youngest person ever to hold that esteemed position. Her 1999 volume of poetry, "On the Bus  with Rosa Parks" exemplifies the ways in which Dove captures a moment, sees it for what it was and is, and then addresses its unique beauty and power. The "Historical"  Claudette Colvin The student examining Rita Doves poems should also understand that there was a real Claudette Colvin who was 15 years old and arrested on March 2nd, 1955, for  refusing to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama (yes, before Rosa Parks). She was little-known and even less-remembered in relationship to the more dramatic occurrence of
