Introduction The concept of the nation state is one that has been existence in human history for, literally, millennia. At the dawn of the  21st century, there are historians, social scientists, and political theorists who would argue that the concept of the nation-states has become redundant with the emergence of globalism and the new  concept of nationalism that has emerged with it. In many ways, contemporary nationalism is only an extension of the issues of fragmentation and economic viability of existing states. In general,  the meaning of "state" is the reference to or identification of a political entity, while the term "nation" more specifically refers to a people. If one is to map  extent of a particular state and then the boundaries of a particular nation, and then makes the determination that the state and the nation occupy the same area on the  surface of Earth, a nation-state exists. In a multi-racial nation, fragmentation into ethnically pure entities has evolved into a major issue. The global economy provides a large market but  also increases competitive pressures. Many nations have formed larger economic units, such as the European Union, and the Confederation of Independent States, to share the burden of economic responsibilities in  existing as a nation-state which then requires a re-examination of what it actually means to be a nation, what the characteristics of such an entity are, and how they relate
