    Or sometimes it comes in writing - most often known as "the pink slip." But what it amounts to is the same thing - the employee is about to be  let go from his or her job. And to the employee, loss of a job is among the top ten most traumatic experiences that he/she can go through; it is  right up there with death of a close friend or relative, a divorce or a move. According to human resources experts Laurence  Stybel and Maryanne Peabody, being fired doesnt have to be quite so traumatic if the employee adopts a specific mind-set when it comes to his or her job. This paper  will focus primarily on Stybel and Peabodys article "The Right Way to be Fired," and will also examine other publications that provide advice to both the boss and employee about  how to handle a layoff or firing; and how to handle the emotional aftermath of what could be a traumatic and life-changing event. Reasons for the firing  For the most part, its surprising that employees are so shocked when they are fired - as most corporations leave plenty of warning signs along  the way to a layoff. For example, a few too many warnings or complaints about work; news about layoffs within the industry and decreased customers orders, loss of clients or  general tension between an employee and boss or work group and employee are sure signs that something bad is about to happen, with that "something bad" likely being the employees  termination. Employees go through mindsets that they are inviolate (particularly the longer they have been working at a particular firm) and simply dont believe it can happen to them until
