Eliots, The Waste Land (1922) one can readily appreciate that it is not simply about  the vacuous state of modern life, or the death of Western Civilization; but it also encompasses a myriad of philosophies that are inherent to Mans spiritual struggles. In what is  perhaps his most famous and complicated work, Eliot uses his controversial poem to detail the journey of Mans soul searching for redemption. The Waste Land is known not only for  its probing subject matter, but also for its radical departure from traditional poetic style and structure - incorporating both historical and literary allusions -- as well as Eliots unconventional use  of language. This poet believed that modern society lacked a vital sense of community and a spiritual cornerstone, and his prose depicts modern society as being the most infertile part  of Mans historical life cycle. According to Eliot, with the onslaught of modernity, human beings grew increasingly isolated and sexual relations  became sterile and meaningless. (Because of the variety and relative obscurity of Eliots allusions, readers must work through the poems footnotes several times to appreciate it, but the general impression  of isolation, decadence and sterility comes through in every verse.) In The Waste Land Eliot plays on the strange and macabre acts of depravity that only the troubled subconscious  seems suited to grasp and reconcile. The poem is a landmark of poetic complexity that attempts to represent a history of human hope and despair through those ideas which the
