    not occur over night, but gradually as the art form evolved. Issues such as love, race and equality are explored. The evolution of the novel is not done, one might  say, in as much as the evolution of man is still an ongoing process. However, there are some significant signposts that can be said to have been influential factors in  the literature spanning the twentieth century. Those things that have undergone changes, it can be said, may have come about as a direct influence as to what was going  on around the writer at the time. This could include environmental factors, poverty level, existence of wartime conditions, or a social reform that was sweeping the nation at the time.  In the time period which includes Charles Dickens, one can see the use of superfluous language, extensive detail and attention to setting, props and characterization, while the plot structure itself,  tends to be fairly weakened. Though he wrote about that which he knew, it is also evident that Dickens work reflects the  socio-economic structure of the time as well. There was a distinct upper class and lower, peasant class, with very little middle class, though workmans guilds were coming into their own.  Most literature of this era tends to ramble around a loosely constructed plot structure, much as the politics of the time did. It seemed to be a time of little  direction, and the writing of the period reflects this. Many writers used their writing as political satire pieces, seeking to make a statement rather than to tell a story, or  develop characters. This is a notable change in the modern era of writing as well. Though satire and irony are still alive and well in present day writing, it is
