In a recent opportunity to participate as an observer of a policy retreat sponsored by Henry David Thoreau on the shores of the now infamous Walden
Pond I had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of not only becoming more familiar with Thoreaus philosophies but also those of representatives from the United States, England, North Korea, South Korea and
Iraq. This experience is particularly unique in that Thoreau, of course, actually died in 1862. His presence back at Walden Pond, therefore, and his ability to head up
this retreat is explainable only by those more familiar with quantum physics than I. Never-the-less, Thoreau it seemed had invited both a student and a war veteran from each
of these countries in the hope of opening the floor for debate. I must say he was indeed successful in doing so.
Thoreau, as would be expected headed up this retreat. In his introductory statement, carefully avoiding the issue of just how he had miraculously reappeared at this critical point in
history, he provided a background of himself and his philosophy. Thoreau and his philosophy, of course are well-known in the United States and among philosophers in general. While
this background was largely unnecessary from the perspective of many of the retreat participants, it served as a useful grounding point. I must say that of the participants the
representatives from Iraq and North Korea seemed most unfamiliar with Thoreau and his mindset. In his introduction Thoreau briefly established who he was
and how he perceived humanity and the government in general. The location of the retreat, of course, was particularly important given the importance that Walden Pond had played in
