    16th century Japanese history. However, I am going to say it anyway. Not only was he an effective strategist/ military leader; but Musashi was also a celebrated  artist who produced fine paintings, riveting sculpture and delicate, feather-like calligraphy that are still some of the finest, and most lauded among Japanese artists today. Nevertheless, this multifaceted  man is best known for his great skill as a swordsman, and the resultant classic text, A Book of Five Rings that evolved from his life experiences  (Musashi, Miyamoto/ 1584-1645 the Man Behind the Legend, 2001). Although his book can be read simply as a guide  to strategy and swordsmanship, this archetype of samurai strategy has managed to set Corporate America on its ear and change its way of doing business. Initially, studied  also for its insights into the Japanese approach to business strategy, Musashis book provides principles relevant to honing ones craft, skill, timing, and spirit - all necessary components of victory  in our modern day, competitive world (Musashi, 1992). This essay discusses Miyamoto Musashis critically acclaimed bestseller, while analyzing a number of its pivotal, philosophical underpinnings.  Since the publication of its first English translation in 1974, A Book of Five Rings has become an underground classic in the American  business community. The fact that it remains applicable even today is due in part to its timeless principles, and firm roots in Zen, Bushido, Heiho, and Musashis life  (Musashi Miyamoto/ 1584-1645 the Man Behind the Legend, 2001).
