The educational and other requirements for certification as an early childhood education assistant differ somewhat by state. In fact, some of  the course requirements differ by college or educational institution. For instance, the Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, Nebraska, writes that their Early Childhood Education Assistant Teacher program offers the student  learning and training opportunities that prepare the candidate to help and assist head teachers fulfill a variety of responsibilities, such as planning activities, organizing experiences and caring for young children  (Metropolitan Community College, 2002). The program of study leading to the assistant certification includes classes in Early Childhood Education Methods, Childrens Health and Nutrition, Curriculum Planning, Basic First Aid for  Early Childhood Education, Child Guidance and Discipline and Behavior Modification (Metropolitan Community College, 2002). Santa Monica College in California writes that their Early Childhood Education programs prepare the candidate to  supervise and provide learning experiences and care for children aged infant through 8 years old (Santa Monica College, 2002). The candidate may work in any of numerous types of settings  (Santa Monica College, 2002).
