establishment of the United States, two non-adjoining colonies should be explored. This will give a student writing on this subject a flavor of what these papers were like in  the early days of the nation. In exploring newspapers from 1764, around the time when many of these emerged, for a period of ten or fifteen years, one sees patterns  emerge. Yet, in comparing and contrasting papers from the different locales, one can also see regional differences come forth. To glean information from the papers, and to note considerable differences,  it is prudent to read information from periodicals in the same general time frame. In reviewing the first week of each month of the Virginia Gazette and the Boston  Gazette and Country Journal for the year 1770, one sees different ideas emanating just prior to the Revolution. It is important to note that this year was quite significant as  in March, the famous Boston Massacre would take place. The Virginia Gazette seemed to reflect the social life of the capital, but also the newer fashion trends that  existed at the time ("The Virginia" PG). The Virginia paper seemed to contain rather light fare, at least when compared to the Boston newspaper. Combing through a variety of papers  from this era, and meticulously reading the articles, it appears that much about fashion, news and ideology about government is spouted. Yet, just as exists today, the paper must be  funded somehow and generally, the cover charge is not sufficient to take care of the cost of production and distribution. This early paper contained much advertising and one can glean  a great deal from that. For example, an advertisement which appeared in this paper on April 16, 1767 was actually not an ad as one would think of advertising today.
