important to understand the theories in general and to then determine how they play a part in constructing the constructs of individual personality. Brief Overview of Humanist Theory  Essentially, humanist theory maintains that everyone has the potential to be a great person - loving, contributing, etc. (Humanist Theory, 2002). However, the  persons "pyramid of needs" must be met before this person is able to fully contribute to society and be the best person they can be (Humanist Theory, 2002). This  theory is based on the work of Maslow and Rogers (Humanist Theory, 2002). In terms of the needs which must be fulfilled in order to become a fully able person,  Maslow says that the most basic are food and shelter (Humanist Theory, 2002). After that, the next need for humans is to feel safe and seek love and acceptance  (Humanist Theory, 2002). "Only after all these things are done can a person fulfill their potential" (Humanist Theory, 2002). To this list of basic needs Rogers added  that people need an environment of genuineness, acceptance, and empathy (Humanist Theory, 2002). "Without these, relationships and healthy personalities will not develop as they should, much like a tree  will not grow without sunlight and water" (Humanist Theory, 2002). Brief Overview of Behaviorist Theory Behaviorism relies on empirical, observable  behaviors, and view the external environment as the "principal (maybe the only) determinant factor in behavior" (Hall, 2002). So, it could be put that in terms of the "nature  vs. nurture" debate, behaviorists would be completely on the nurture side (Hall, 2002). Therefore, a persons personality rests entirely on their environment according to this theory (Hall,
