    1. Problem Definition McDevice Company, the manufacturer of therapeutic medical  devices, is a subsidiary of HealthCare Corporation. The company has been in operation slightly over sixty years but recent years have shown a decline in company profitability. The  company was, in fact, facing certain closure if performance did not improve. To effect such an improvement management realized that they had to break into new markets and develop  or acquire products to fulfill those markets. Part of McDevices proposed solution to this decline is bringing new blood into the company. That new blood has come in  the form of Jim Liss. Liss has been hired on as a new manager at McDevice. His brief time with the company, however, does not give a true  idea of his value. Liss has twenty-four years experience under his belt as a purchasing professional in two separate firms occupying the same industry as McDevice.  Liss was recruited by McDevice to improve its own purchasing performance and its image. McDevices intent for Liss included both intracompany pursuits and  as a key in relationships with the companys outside vendors. McDevice had numerous relationships with outside vendors of raw materials, packaging materials, and pre-fabricated components which would be integrated  into McDevices own therapeutic medical devices. Liss was also slotted for buying completed products from other manufacturers which would then be destined for resale under the McDevice label.  Liss had a considerable job ahead of him given McDevices declining sales and earnings over the previous five years.
