be death or destruction. Statistics regarding driving fatalities show that half of the incidents were alcohol related (Desmond, 1987, p.80). Interestingly, while legal alcohol levels are at a certain
point in various states, the law holds people accountable for driving, even when inebriated. The old joke is that someone had been too drunk to make a good decision about
whether they could get behind the wheel. Yet, when someone does drink and drive, they are held accountable for anything that results from the episode. One such case recently
had a lot of airplay. Martin Heidgen was charged with murder for a 2005 car accident that left a seven year old dead ("Dramatic Video Played," 2006). Obviously, the victims
family is distraught and anyone with a heart would feel for the family and the girl whose life was taken. Yet, Heidgen did what many people do. He went
out, had a few drinks, and then drove home. The problem is that he got into an accident. Heidgens blood level was .28 ("Dramatic Video Played," 2006). That is
quite high, and certainly he was drunk. Clearly, he had more than a few drinks, but that is all the more reason to not hold him accountable. If he was
that drunk, one would not expect him to be able to make an appropriate decision about driving. Of course, responsible people who are not alcoholics will choose a designated driver
in advance, take a cab home, or drink a small amount of alcohol. That said, in todays society, alcohol is so widespread that it is almost impossible to avoid situations
