    Number of Pages: 7

    Summary of the research paper:

This 7 page paper is a proposal for a research project studying network based intrusion detention systems (NIDS). The paper has the hypothesis that is it more effective to use open source NIDS rather than vendor versions of the system. The paper outlines the goals and gives the methodology that can be used. The bibliography cites 5 sources.

for security products due to the increased risk they face from various risks in the virtual world. As the internet has grown the risk have increased, there are now more  viruses than ever before and firewalls may be of value but they cannot keep put all hackers or intruders due to the presence of unintentional backdoors. For this reasons the  use of detection systems has increased in importance. These may be host based or internet based systems. In this paper we look at the net-work bases systems and will argue  that due to the high bandwidth requirements that are needed by network based intrusion detection systems (NIDS) the optimum approach may be to use an open source code and  then invest funds in an expert that can tailor the programme to the needs of the client rather than buying a vender version of a NIDS. 2. Methodology  When collecting data there are two main types of information; qualitative and quantitative. Quantitative research relies more on a large amount of results, with  the data being recorded often being predominately numerical, it is suitable to be used as a method of determining cause and effect relationships. The methodologies will often be based on  scientific procedures of investigation. Quantitative research includes descriptive, correlational, quasi-experimental and experimental. Qualitative research is narrower and more concentrated by looking to information to be gained in-depth from a smaller  quantity of subjects. Often this research will be word based with methods such as recorded in-depth interviews and other data which is not so easily classified. Qualitative research is  best suited to phenomenological research and research were there are less defined boundaries as is the case with this research. This means we will take a qualitative approach with this
