in Cupertino, CA, has a global reach, both through its computers/operating systems (Macintosh and Mac OS X), its digital players (iPods), smart phones (iPhones) and music distribution capacity (iTunes).
Background and Overview Apple Inc. manufactures, markets and distributes desktop and laptop computers (with the OS X operating system), digital music players,
an online music store, servers, wireless networking equipment and publishing/multimedia software (Dorsch, 2010). More than half of Apples sales occur in the United States (Dorsch, 2010). Though it was once
the worlds top PC maker, Apple is now downgraded to niche status, though the company leads the market in design innovation (Dorsch, 2010). The company believes in producing nice-looking products
that are functional, and that have higher price points as a result (Dorsch, 2010). The company opened an online application ("App") store in 2009 (Dorsch, 2010).
The company was founded by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak in 1976, the year that the Apple I computer was built (without a monitor, keyboard or
casing) (Dorsch, 2010). In 1977, Wozniak added a keyboard and a color monitor, and by 1980, the company had gone public (Dorsch, 2010). Wozniak left the company in 1983 and
unveiled the Macintosh in 1984 (Dorsch, 2010). Jobs left in 1985 (following struggles with company president John Sculley) (Dorsch, 2010). The late 1980s saw competition from Microsoft, as its Windows
operating system sported a graphical interface similar to Apples (Dorsch, 2010). The 1990s were ones of turmoil for the company; in 1994
it began licensing clones of its OS (which didnt work, as they stole sales) (Dorsch, 2010). The board ousted then-chair Gilbert Amelio and asked Jobs to come back (Dorsch, 2010).
