We contend that regular visits to the gym help people maintain health because regular exercise is good  for most people. When people pay regular visits to their local gym, they feel better, they look better, they lose weight, increase muscle tone and in some respects, improve their  longevity. Gyms are advantageous in one respect -- they provide a place where cardiovascular equipment and weight training is available under one  roof. A person who joins a gym has access to treadmills, stairmasters, weight machines and free weights, all under one roof. The  one roof philosophy is a good one, too -- it means there is no excuse, like weather, to prevent someone from going and working out. Even if its freezing outside,  or burning hot, the gym is at a comfortable climate-controlled level. Also, depending on the level of the gym, there are swimming  pools and other equipment to help with any kind of back problems. Some gyms even have snack bars or fruit juice bars, so after a workout, the member can count  on maybe getting some kind of a healthy drink or lunch afterward. But are gyms the panacea theyre made out to be?  For one thing, membership rates are sometimes exorbitant, with most "chain gyms" luring in unsuspecting people with monthly payments theyll be on for the rest of their lives. This is  okay if people are motivated to use their memberships to pay regular visits to the gym. But the problem comes if the member no longer wants the membership -- he
