As a result of all that is required of teachers many suffer from incredibly stress and find themselves in a position where they  are seriously burnt out from teaching. In the following paper we examine some of the history of stress and stress management as it relates to teachers, and then discuss some  other perspectives concerning the subject. Stress Management and the History of Teaching Stress relating to teachers has perhaps been in existence since teachers were in existence themselves. Many  believe that it is an inherently stressful job and that history has not changed that. What has changed is how we look at it. One particular book which discusses teacher  stress is "Stress in teachers: past, present and future" edited by Jack Dunham and Ved Varma. In a book review of this book Soder (2001) presents us with some very  intriguing and enlightening facts about teacher stress, both past and present. We note that throughout much of history when stress has been addressed, this book points out that there is  a "danger of focusing research on the individual rather than the individual within an organization...danger of assuming that stress management strategies which focus only on individuals can make a significant  difference. In the Preface Jack Dunham presents stress in teaching as an interactionist concept--as the outcome of a complex and sometimes precarious balance between peoples perception of work pressures, their  coping strategies and their stress reactions" (Soder, 2002; p. 685). In essence, throughout much of mankinds history stress has not been addressed by professionals. And, when it has been  addressed it has apparently not been addressed correctly. Like any other field, or condition, in the world, the aspect of stress has not really been a concern for the public
