    United States. Historically there are a number of factors involved in these events including race, class and gender which have served to impact the access of this aspect of  education. IMPORTANT EVENTS IN THE HISTORY OF ADULT LITERACY No one can argue the important role that literacy has  played in the history not only of the United States but of the entire world as well. Because of written manuscripts and printed volumes one can detail the history  of the world for hundreds and hundreds of years. Many claim if it were not for the printing press "Martin Luther and the Protestant revolution could not have taken  place" (Manuscripts, Books, and Maps PG). This might be an exaggeration of sorts, but certainly if it were not for the availability of vast copies of books and pamphlets  then word and ideas could not have been spread as far and wide as they have been since the advent of the press. It was in the fifteenth century that  the famous Gutenberg Press was born, and because of this new printing convenience it was easier for people to get reading material. Suddenly it was easier to make volume  copies so that reading materials could be distributed more widely. One aspect that affected the United States when printed materials were made readily available was the fact that churches were  now able to more easily distribute information and biblical information. In fact it was mostly "bibles and religious tracts" (Manuscripts, Books, and Maps PG) that were first printed using  printing presses. The Protestant Reformation was a direct result of the printed materials now being available, and in the 1600s one of the biggest events as far as
