car and its benefits is indeed timely. The history of the electric car is an old one, and dates back further than most would imagine. There are various  reasons for its lack of dominance in the marketplace, but the future does hold more opportunity for this amazing device. The History of the Electric Car  Specifically, an electronic vehicle is powered by electric utility power, which can come from renewable energy sources, such as wind, solar, hydro, geothermal, and  others (What is an EV, 2003). In its most basic form then, "the drive train of an electric vehicle consists of a battery attached to an off and on  switch which is attached to an electric motor" (Electric Vehicles, 2003). There are means of controlling how much power goes to the motor and also to the gears that  drive the wheels (Electric Vehicles, 2003). However, what they are NOT is completely pollution-free as most would believe (Electric Vehicles, 2003). While electric cars are much more efficient  than gasoline-powered cars, they can and do create pollution largely because the production of electricity is typically from the burning of fossil fuel (Electric Vehicles, 2003).  Most people dont realize that the history of electric cars is as old as internal combustion, but clearly electric cars never were able to  dominate the industry (Kirsch, 2000). When the automobile era dawned in the late 1890s, there were various technologies in competition, including steam, gasoline, and electric (Kirsch, 2000). But  the battle was soon over with internal combustion the clear winner, due in part to the very intriguing lack of interest and backing on the part of the electric utility
