socio-economic group and the level of spending. In preparing this paper the information has been obtained from a range of 60 randomly selected customers, and their monthly spend has
been monitored. Here there are several issues we need to consider, there is the risk that although random, the selection of the sample may have created a bias, and as
such there is always the risk of sampling error. The paper makes the assumption that the sample can be deemed as representative as the sample is of the size
where a 95% confidence level can be fairly accurately predicted. 2. The Data The data has been presented in a list form, with only the details of the individual
spend and the socio-economic group to which they belong. The first stage is to place this information into a table that can be used to create the statistics required. This
is shown in table 1, with all figures being the level of spending in pounds sterling, per household for the test month. Table 1; Data classified into socio economic
groups. A B C1 C2 D E 382 336 362 358 296 301 390 375 359 318 319 299 425 362 312 394 341 303 404 366 307 356
