BBthinn.doc  "Am I Thin Enough Yet?" Sharlene Hesse-Biber Written by B. Bryan Babcock for the Paperstore, Inc., February 2001 Introduction  Am I Thin Enough? is the "question" half of a 1994 book title by Sharlene Hesse-Biber, but also appears in our text. The "rest of the story," Hesse-Biber claims,  may be found by looking at The Cult of Thinness and the Commercialization of Identity. Although she doesnt directly accuse anyone she feels that there are societal forces at  work, which are detrimental to womens health. Everyday, women are given the message that how they look is more important than how they think. Hesse-Bibler, a sociology Professor at  Boston College, collected information concerning the eating habits of about 400 students during an eight-year period. Her research goal during this period was the investigate why, "so many  women see weight, as defining their identity. In this chapter she tells the story of Delia, who is conflicted due to her bulimia. For Delia appearance has  become everything. Delia not only wants to look good for the attention that it gets her, but she is also determined that her self worth is only in her  looks. But she does want to live well so her only perceived choice is to marry well. Thus Delia has staked her present and her future on her  appearances, and by "looking tiny," a man will feel that he is "bigger and stronger" and "can take care of her" (491).
