    presence in many countries the organization has changed over time, where it was once it has singular goals seeking to protect civil and political rights, it has seen the area  of actions expand to economic, social and cultural rights. At the ame time there has been increased competition from other NGOs both in a direct manner as seen with Human  Rights Watch (HRW) and indirectly from other charitable organization such as World Wildlife Fund who are competing for the same charitable giving (Quelch and Laidler, 2003).  In 2001 the organization has reached a cross roads where the future need to be considered. The analysis will start with a SWOT analysis which can  be used to examine the current and potential future strategies that AI may adopt. 2. SWOT Analysis 2.1 Strengths Amnesty international is a large and well established organization; with 174,000  members and net revenues of ?13.4 million the organization has a wide reach. The structure is one that can be argued as a strength, the development of AI has followed  a democratic route and an elected Internal Executive Committee (IEC) to govern the organization. This elective process was designed to reflect the views of the members and to balance and  the 500 member council would meet every two years to discuss issues concerning the views, values and mission of AI helping ensure that the organization remained relevant and reflected the  views and needs of the changing global environment (Quelch and Laidler, 2003). The role of the secretariat is the everyday running of the organisation, however with the level  of autonomy given to the country offices and the different approaches this is more of a guiding role. It is also the secretariat that has traditionally held the responsibility for
