    hope and despair. Like many of his works, there is a powerful sense of symbolism within, offering us many different themes and elements that deserve examination. In "El Colonel no  tiene quien le escriba" we have the powerful theme of death and resurrection. There are also religious themes concerning time. In the following paper we present a tutorial which examines  themes of religion, death, and resurrection. El Colonel no tiene quien le escriba First off we examine the argument presented by the student which states that the concepts  of death and resurrection are detrimental to the development of the story. From this perspective we can see that the story, with elements of death and resurrection, is one that  is painful and desperate. While the characters continue to focus on their dead son, and the possible spiritual connection that the rooster holds with their son, they are inadvertently making  their conditions worse, and making their lives miserable. If these elements, considering they are supposed to be detrimental to the story, did not exist the characters may well have more  hope and be able to move on with their lives instead of being stuck in their current position of poverty, hunger, and despair. However, the story would cease to be  the story it is without the elements of death and resurrection. It is through this simple connection to their son, to life, that they are able to go on day  after day, suffering and essentially starving. Marquez use of the elements of death and resurrection emphasize the story, they do not take away from the story. And, without these elements  we would not have the story we do. In all honesty they do not take away from the story but emphasize the despair of the individuals as well as help
