Edwardian home, in the midst of a party. The inspector is, as we can easily understand, seeking the murderer of a crime. As such the play seems to be nothing  more than a murder mystery. But, while it involves a murder, and the solving of the mystery, it is also a tale of the upper class during the Edwardian  era. It is a play which addresses the pretentious and the self-righteous individuals during this era. Bearing these realities in mind we present the following paper which examines Priestleys play  as it involves the Edwardian Era and Priestleys message as it pertains to this era and the social elite of the time. Edwardian Era and the Message in  Priestleys Play "The play opens with the engagement party of Sheila Birling and Gerald Croft (son of a prosperous businessman) in the imaginary city of Brumley. Into these celebrations enters  Inspector Goole, who announces an unpleasant suicide: a young woman named Eva Smith swallowed disinfectant and died" (Anonymous Using Media for teaching English, 2002; inspector.php). In this very subtle opening  we note the superior presence of the people of the party, and the wealthy status of the individuals who seem almost put out by the appearance of the supposed inspector.  This plot thickens as we note that each individual within the Birling family seems to have some connection to Eva, or some subtle reason for being involved in her  death. And, it all centers around the fact that Eva, who had worked for the familys factory, had been actively involved in fighting for a pay raise.
