Bryan  Babcock for the Paperstore, Inc., April 2001 Note to student: it is suggested for this sample paper that you attach a copy of the Jenkins critique to the end.  Introduction The legend goes that when Abraham Lincoln met diminutive Harriet Beecher Stowe, he said to her, "Ah - you are the little lady that started the "great war."  Certainly that is not quite the truth but Stowes book did have a great influence on the events of the time. This discussion will cover various parts of the  novel, Uncle Toms Cabin. Characters The name-sake of our story is "Uncle Tom." He is a loving and kind man who lives his belief system. He would give  up all he has (including his own family) to be able to help some one else. He is the example of "turning the other cheek," and even when he  is treated poorly and, works at showing others how it might be different than it actually is. Mr. Shelby means well, but just cant hold everything together; whether his illness  has weakened him, we cannot be sure - certainly he could be the metaphor for the weakened and suffering male of the South. He is not with us long.  On the other hand Mrs. Shelby is the lady with "grit." She vows to keep the plantation together, even though she secretly feels that slavery is wrong.  She shows determination and spirit, takes over the plantation, still cares for the souls of those in her charge.
