    one that affects what consumers ultimately pay for goods -- and unfortunately -- the economy in general. It is a crime that dramatically touches every industry. None  is ever found to be immune. In fact, shoplifting has become so prevalent that it almost seems to be a vocation in and of itself! However, there are  innumerable occasions wherein the alleged perpetrator is falsely accused, and subsequently wrongly detained or even falsely arrested. In this day and age, when court actions are rampant, this can  bode heavily in the way of lawsuits for the deep-pocket, major retail chains such as Sears, Eddie Bauer, Toys R Us and the like. This essay discusses the ramifications  -- not only of shoplifting -- but also those relevant to false arrests by store security, what can be done to prevent them, while also citing examples of recent cases  (Shoplifting False Arrests, 2001 and See Also Crime Doctor, 2001). Todays progressive retailers have a vast array of inventory controls in effect  at several disparate levels. In addition, every store knows what departments and which product lines have the greatest inventory loss. These are all based on its multifarious audits,  product movement analysis reports, the number of actual shoplifter apprehensions, and the revelation of demonstrable signs of theft. Professional loss prevention personnel/ store security are trained to know what  day of the week, what time of day, what product lines, and what departments will have the most significant shoplifting activity. Furthermore, armed with these data the specialists set  out to observe shopper conduct/ behavior in the most active areas and during the most customer active times.
