Therefore, it is interesting to interpret this novel in terms of the critical response  it received and, more specifically, to try and reveal how the critics viewed the characters and setting of this somewhat controversial novel. Understanding  this novel in this way brings to light many important issues. This wasnt just a black man writing a story. This was a very powerful story written at  a very influential time in history. The ideas which Hughes revealed in this novel were no doubt controversial at the time. Therefore, we cannot necessarily regard this novel  in light of current events, but must attempt to interpret this novel from the viewpoint of the past, when it was originally written and published.
