    into the human condition. The main character of this novel, Hagar Shipley, is of particular interest as is how she views herself and others and, how this relates to  her own personality. There are many answers to that question which will be discussed in-depth. First it is important to understand a little bit about Hagar. This is  a woman of great complexity and depth, and, despite he life circumstances, she has managed to retain her "spunk". And yet, she is a victim of her own emotions  too, in the sense that from a child she learned to cover up whatever she was feeling and emulated her father in the sense that she reacted in the same,  unemotional, non-communicating ways as he did. In her eyes this represented strength, for it was a sure sign of weakness, she learned from her father, to show emotion.  Therefore, as time went on she learned to hide her problems and her fears. Instead of dealing with problems openly she hides from them behind a mask.  She doesnt want to deal with, or acknowledge, her problems, including when she begins to not feel well because she is very sick. This emerging illness in her life indeed  becomes something which does need to be confronted whether she likes it or not. In order to do this however, she must let-go of her attachment to appearances which  had always been so very important to her - much like a blanket softly covering wounds which would otherwise be exposed. In other words, her commitment to maintaining appearances  helped her not have to deal with the deeper realities of her life. By pretending everything was happy and pretty and fine, then everyone else would believe that and
