against the French who are fighting them from Indo-China. This book is set in the 1950s and therefore Vietnam did not yet exist - it was still known as
Indo-China. The French and the Vietnamese were at war with each other and were fighting bitterly. Pyle begins to
develop his own ideas and philosophies about the political situation in which he is immersed and manages to channel a significant amount of economic aid to a third party
which is actually for the benefit of the South Vietnamese. What is so interesting about this book is that the
author wrote it in the mid-1950s and therefore so much of what he writes and the concerns which he expresses we now know did indeed come to fruition. Its
almost as if Greene is privy to a crystal ball which foreshadows the future - that of the Vietnam War.
Thomas Fowler is the narrator throughout this book. He is a British war correspondent. Fowler himself is quite a character. He smokes opium and has a
tough exterior but he manages to get along just fine with the other correspondents and there seems to be a good essence beneath his crusty surface. In terms of his
opium habit, he uses it frequently to basically numb himself: The practiced inhaler can draw a whole pipe down in one
breath, but I always had to take several pulls. Then I lay back, with my neck on the leather pillow, while she prepared the second pipe (Greene, p.13).
