revolved in some manner around love and marriage throughout the ages. It is interesting as well to examine the different approaches to this matter which have been pursued by  these various artists, whose interpretations indeed run the gamut. In this way, Congreve offers his own interpretations of marriage in The Way of the World, and offers audiences both  insight mixed with a good dose of humor in regards to this topic. His portrayal is always poignant, while evoking a wide array of emotions as he ventures on  a long and winding path of illumination. In short, Congreves look at marriage is a view based more upon necessity,  agreement and practicality than it is an institution which unites men and women for the purpose of solidifying their love. Its a cynics view no doubt, but one cannot  help but see bits of reality amid the often hilariously honest dialogue which transpires between characters. Where the innocent may imagine adoration, Congreve portrays greed.  One perfect example of Congreves approach to love is in the relationship between Millamant and Mirabell, who arrange their pre-nuptial agreement before they agree  to marry. Again, this takes place amid humorous circumstances and their dialogue is peppered with wit and sarcasm, but behind their words lies a strikingly serious message - one  which places marriage under spotlights for intense examination. Further evidence exists in the relationship between Millamant and Mirabell as well.  While they seem to be fine people individually, their union doesnt at all indicate any sense of emotional fulfillment or deep satisfaction based upon mutual love and romance.
