    There is considerable controversy over the practice by some non-profit organizations of providing free needles to intravenous drug users. The hope  in this practice, of course, is to eliminate one of the major mechanisms through which Autoimmune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is spread. Given both the direct and indirect impacts of  AIDS it could be argued that the practice of providing clean needles should be a priority in addressing the AIDS problem currently facing the world.  Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a viral disease that attacks the human immune system making it ineffective in fighting disease or sickness caused by microbial organisms.  Although numerous treatments are in the experimental stages and several drugs have been used successfully to temporarily prolong the lives of persons infected with AIDS, a cure has yet  to be discovered. Without treatment the picture is more grim, death usually occurs within a few months to a few years after the virus attack on the human system.  AIDS was first discovered in New York and California among homosexual males and intravenous drug users in 1980. It quickly  became apparent that AIDS was not limited to the U.S. but in fact large populations of many third world countries, particularly in Africa and Haiti were affected. Within one  decade of its discovery, AIDS had become an epidemic and had spread to populations across the world. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) has been directly implicated as  causative agent in AIDS. In other words, HIV is a predecessor stage to full blown AIDS.
