Such a procedure means that nutrients may be either provided enterally via a stomach tube that  is inserted through the nose or a tube that goes directly into the stomach or intestines (Allari 86). Similarly, artificial hydration is when the fluids are transmitted through the  veins (Allari 86). Both processes may be described as intravenous feedings, since they rely upon veins to transmit the human bodys much-needed nutrition (Allari 86). In recent years,  there has been increasing controversy as to whether or not a patient should receive intravenous feedings. Intravenous feedings should be mandatory on ethical, medical, and humanist grounds. Most religious  teachings - most notably, Christianity (particularly Catholicism) - advocate that a patient receive what is described as "the normal care due to the sick person in similar cases" (Nutrition and  Hydration: Moral and Pastoral Reflections 387). All patients deserve this type of normal care as a sign of respect of the dignity to which all human beings should be  accorded (Nutrition and Hydration: Moral and Pastoral Reflections 387). Any type of nutrition and hydration that requires medical assistance should be considered normal care that every human being deserves  (Nutrition and Hydration: Moral and Pastoral Reflections 387). Intravenous feeding is a type of medical charity that needs to be bestowed upon all patients in need. In the  Bible, this obligation is emphasized as an essential component of Christian compassion in Matthew 10:42 and 25:35 and Mark 9:41 (Nutrition and Hydration: Moral and Pastoral Reflections 387). But  the issue is hardly complicated since intravenous feedings are necessary methods of supporting life (Euteneuer). The late Pope John Paul II quoted biblical teaching to bolster his contention that
