did not long hold on to the rights to his creations or the business he built around them. Thomas Edison fared some better later in his career, but he  too lost control in the earlier years. Scientists and engineers have been notorious for their lack of business sense, or perhaps simple impatience with things so mundane and routine  as investor relations and corporate tax payments. There have been some who have been successful in business, but one with a true "engineering mentality" generally is better at making  new rules and bending existing ones than operating within those which exist. Acting CEO One  of the features of Pierre Berinis (2002) discussion about combining engineering and entrepreneurialism is his description of his current duties in his business. He says he is the "Acting  Chief Executive Officer (CEO) while Spectalis finds a real CEO" (Berini, 2002). Spectalis is Berinis (2002) company of course; what is of note is that he so clearly realizes  that "acting" as CEO and truly functioning as the CEO can and often are two entirely different sets of activities. So many companies  begun by technically-oriented individuals fail for the worst of reasons - lack of good management - when all other aspects of operation are sound. They can have wonderful products,  unique approaches to old problems or create new perspectives that have not before been considered. Unless they are managed well and governed in accordance with regulatory issues such as  environmental requirements or timely tax payments, they can be closed down by several government agencies and all the entrepreneurs efforts have been wasted.
