    1. Introduction There are many variants which will impact on  the way a company performs. These include operational and organisational strategies, access to resources and the way these meet market needs. One of the most important resources for any firm  is that of the employees, but they are an important resource that is often overlooked. Whatever business or industry employees will be key to success, where goods are sold it  is employees that will develop and produce them, employees may also sell them and where there are services it is employees that deliver them. In all cases contact between the  company and the stakeholders will depend on the employees. Motivated employees are more productive and loyal, more likely to give positive results and are create a positive working relationship with  the customers and other stakeholders. For large companies a range of strategies are used to try and ensure that the potential benefits or advantages that can be provided by  employees are realised. These are traditionally seen in the human resources management (HRM) functions. Typically this will start with the recruitment and selection process, to ensure both that the right  staff with the correct skills and characteristics are selected as well as to ensure that the employee will value the job when they start work. The approach to human resource  management will also impact heavily.
