Unfortunately, this attitude has infiltrated the school system, as well, in that high school students are faced with the challenge of learning the basics - much less achieving  higher level learning - considered to be the cornerstone to a successful college preparation. Inasmuch as there are those few educators who take the extra time and effort necessary  to impart high school students with a meaningful education, far too many have adopted the "sink or swim" method of instruction for those who cannot follow along with the class.  This concept, which forces the student to either keep up or fail, comes from the fact that "teachers typically deal with the class as a whole and do not  consider the individual needs of students..." (Goldenberg, 1996, p. 353).
