    there are many other organisations where leadership may be seen as key to the success of failure of the overall goals. The police service is such an organisation. Considering, the  role of leadership in the police there are many studies that indicate leadership in public sector organisations will impact on the performance levels and results due to the impact on  both motivation and culture (Jones, 2002, Goldsmith, 2001). Leadership may be seen as may levels, each being important as good leadership at the top may be undermined by poor leadership  which leave police officers or employees feeling under valued and under supported were there is poor leadership, whilst under good leadership they will have higher levels of motivation and develop  a greater loyalty to the job. There are many different way in which a leader may seek to lead. Different situations may require divergent styles, which will reflect the  values and personality. However, there are there main styles that are characterised as autocratic, democratic and non-directive. Autocratic is also known directive, this is a task orientated leadership style. Democratic  is more self explanatory, however this may also be seen as process orientated and concerned with relationship ratter than task behaviour. The final style is non-directive, this is also known  as a Laissez Faire styles which is indirect and involves deferring to others. When all applying these to the work of the police it is the former two that would  appear most appropriate in the police force therefore, it is these two that will be examined and then applied to the way in which the in Western Australian Police Services(WAPS)  has framed its future objectives. The autocrat may be seen as a leader that is most associated with scientific management styles. The leadership style was low trust with a
