Aztec area stretched "from the Pacific to the Atlantic" (History Portal PG) and had over ten million people. This paper lists three arguments on each side discussing both the  negative and positive aspects that the Spanish conquest created. THE SPANISH CONQUERORS When the Spanish conquerors invaded in November of 1519, it was with an almost awe-inspiring  fanfare. The Aztec writings tell of soldiers "mounted on stags" (Aztec Account of the Spanish Conquest of Mexico PG) and "they make a loud noise when they run; they  make a great din, as if stones were raining on the earth" (PG). At the time when the Spanish arrived, the Aztec nation was numbered as at least ten million  people. Their religion demanded that they make living sacrifices in order to appease their gods. These sacrifices could be quite brutal, often throwing living victims into pits of  fire, then dragging them out before they died in order to pull their living hearts from their bodies to give to the gods. One account tells of an Aztec  king who "sacrificed 20,000 people after a campaign in Oaxaca" (Aztecs PG). The Spanish of course did not believe in human sacrifice as far as their religion went, so it  goes without saying that many thousands of peoples lives were spared once the Aztec nation was forced to discontinue this ceremony. The Aztec had been well known for going  to war simply to collect humans to sacrifice. The Spanish, upon their overtaking the Aztec nation, set about immediately to change the landscape of South America, some of these changes  becoming permanent to this day.
