    Dogs are considered the first animal ever domesticated by humans; bones found in campsites dating as far back as the late Stone Age have been a common discovery.  However, the camaraderie and respect between man and dog born out of that natural progression has not effectively maintained its presence throughout modern day society, with dogs becoming the victim  of human irresponsibility and mistreatment. This breakdown in admiration and affection from mans side has caused certain dog breeds to suffer the wholly unjustified and broad sweeping condemnation of  being labeled as vicious. Dogs, like people, will defend themselves when they perceive their person or property is being threatened. However, dogs - unlike people - do not do  so out of vindictiveness, sport or entertainment purposes; rather, dogs abide by the basic rules of self-preservation. Dogs of all breeds respond to the stimulus presented to them, whether  that is gentle, loving and nurturing or harsh, painful and terrifying. When examining the issues behind the quest to outlaw certain so-called vicious breeds, it is important for the  student to first look closely at the accused breeds and understand why this particular handful is on trial. The common denominator between and among such dog breeds as the pit  bull, rottweiler, mastiff, Doberman pinscher and chow is strength, size, independent attitude and intelligence. Taking these aspects into consideration makes it readily apparent why these particular breeds are highly  sought after for guard duty and protection, thereby rendering the training of such dogs as the reason why their respective breeds as a whole are branded with the unflattering and  downright unfounded vicious label. Clearly, one cannot overlook the human factor when discussing the social impact of vicious dog breeds, being that people are the ones responsible for placing
