    particular during the tragedy of the Dust Bowl era. It tells the story of the Joad family as they leave their home and head out for California, along with many  other displaced families, seeking land and life. It is a story of the times and is an incredibly accurate portrayal of what life was like for many families who found  themselves without land during the great Dust Bowl and the Depression. However, at the same time it was also a book that shocked readers with vulgarity and sexual scenes that  invoked disgust. This is the premise that most use when illustrating why the book was banned. And, for many parts of the United States this may well have been the  reasoning behind banning and burning the book. But, we also note that one particular banning, that which occurred in Kern County, California, indicates that some people banned the book for  far deeper reasons as they felt it was an affront to our country and the way Kern County was depicted. In this respect we can see that the book touched  on nerves because it offered a direct and honest look at some very distasteful realities concerning Kern County and the nation at large. Bearing these possibilities and realities in mind  we present the following paper which discusses the banning of Steinbecks novel. Banning "The Grapes of Wrath" In more fully understanding the varied nature of the banning and  destruction of Steinbecks book we first present a look at different cases and actions around the country.
