JGApigsn.rtf Book Review: Pigs in Heaven by Barbara Kingsolver Research Compiled for The  Paper Store Enterprises Inc. 10/2001 to Use This Paper Properly, INTRODUCTION Best known for her best-selling  book The Poisonwood Bible, Barbara Kingsolver has woven another intricate tale with sympathetic and realistic characters that have an interesting story to tell. Pigs in Heaven is a book  steeped in the tradition of the Cherokee Nation, and emphasizes the importance of children maintaining a connection with their culture and the roots of their history. PIGS IN HEAVEN  The main characters in Kingsolvers book are Taylor Greer and her adopted daughter, Turtle, a child of Cherokee parents. The reader is quickly caught up in their lives and  realizes from the beginning how much Turtle means to her adopted mother Taylor. Taylors natural mother is deceased, and Turtle had been the victim of her alcoholic aunts abusive boyfriend.  Having had both of her arms broken, Turtle was then abandoned to Taylors care. The child is understandably traumatized and has little self esteem or personality. Taylors  love of this frightened child is the healing agent that helps Turtle to grow. The symbolism of Turtles name, for she has retreated into a shell, is a reminder of  Kingsolvers way of examining the lives of her characters in all of her books. At once compelling and yet simple, the lives of Taylor and Turtle are nonetheless of  great interest and quickly have the reader hooked as to how their lives are going to turn out.
