prominent of all is the barrier of gender. Why? Gender can only mean that one is a man or a woman, and while medically, there is actually evidence that one
can be born to neither, the fact is that life is color coded by whether or not a baby is a boy or a girl. Boys come into a world
of blue, while girls are put on pedestals and dressed in lacy pink. Boys are treated as tough and laughter may emanate as ones tough toddler tumbles down a flight
of stairs, only to get up without a scratch. The same attitude does not hold true for girls, as they are seen as delicate and breakable, and while one can
argue that this is a problem of environment, and not nature, the fact is that men and women are different. As women grow up, they realize that things are not
equal. Gender can be a true barrier in the world of work as well as in school. By and large, boys are seen as the ones who will succeed in
the world of work. It is a prejudice hard to shake, and while that is the case, it seems that also, girls do not get the appropriate help they may
need in respect to learning disabilities and things of that nature. Kleinfeld (1998) reports that there is an over-representation of males in special education classes and this is generally accepted.
In fact, there are few disputes and society says that boys are more simply prone to dyslexia and ADHD, for example. People buy that explanation as to why girls are
not helped as frequently, but it could be that girls are simply not considered to be as important as boys and so are not tested appropriately. Despite the fact
