    Behavior Management - Case Study

    Number of Pages: 6

    Summary of the research paper:

A 10 page paper. The paper begins with the behavior to be changed in a five-year-old boy. Skinner's theory of operant conditioning is explained because it is the foundation for behavior change programs. The steps for diagnosing the problem behavior are explained. A plan is then proposed to change the boy's behavior at home. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

a four-hour duration of time. Every time the commercials came on, John got up and began jumping on the sofa. He continued the behavior until the commercials ended and the  cartoon show resumed. Warnings and scolding did not stop the behavior. Behavior Management Information The behavior plan will be based on the use of a punisher, however, reinforcement will  be discussed to demonstrate knowledge. The plan follows the tenets of behavior analysis, which is founded on B.F. Skinners operant conditioning theory, which he explained as: "conditioning is the scientific  term for learning" (Pagewise, Inc., 2002). The term operant "refers to Skinners idea that any organism "operates" on his environment - that is, performs actions that change the environment around  it for better or for worse" (Pagewise, Inc., 2002). Skinner believed that a behavior, an action that any person or animal takes has a consequence that occurs naturally in the  specific environment (Pagewise, Inc., 2002). This principle is called operant conditioning (Pagewise, Inc., 2002). In this theory, reinforcement and punishment are used to change an undesirable behavior or to increase  a desirable behavior. In this sense, a behavior is any act, verbal or physical that can be observed (Mattaini, 1996). In other words, you can see or hear it.  The theory is based on the premise that all behavior is learned and it is a result of consequences in the environment. The individual interacts and responds to the environment,  thus, if the environment is changed, the behavior will be changed. Every behavior has a consequence for all of us, no matter our age (Cartwright, 2006). Skinner (n.d.) said: "We  reward and punish people, for example, so that they will behave in different ways." Skinner described reinforcement as something that increases the likelihood a specific behavior will occur again (Pagewise,
