To understand this point, first of all, consider the culturally understood definitions of the words comprising the clich?. The "best things" are understood to refer to love, family,  the feelings of satisfaction and achievement that come from helping others by performing acts designed to help individuals or society as a whole by providing services that do not result  in monetary compensation for the individual. In other "best things" are the things we associated with life outside of the way in which we earn a living. The meaning of  this phrase lies in the love and adoration of small children for their parents and in the wonder of newfound love between people who are attracted to each other, as  well as in the awe that is felt at witnessing the beauty in nature, such as a magnificent sunset. The second key word that needs to be understood with  the standard clich? is the meaning of the word "free." An online dictionary defines "free" as "Costing nothing; gratuitous" [http://www.thefreedictionary.com/free]. In other words, something that is "free" is something that  does not require money in order for an individual to acquire it. In terms of the clich?, this indicates that the "best things in life" require no payment, but are  rather inherent in the framework of life itself. The implications is that an individual does not have to exert any effort, any work, in order to acquire these things because  they are "free."
