    someone who was national security advisor to Presidents Reagan and Bush ("Powell," 2001). Powell also has the unique designation of having served as the first African American chairman of the  Joint Chiefs of Staff (2001). Powell was born in Harlem, in New York, and his Jamaican-born parents were laborers; although born in Manhattan, he would actually grow up the  South Bronx (2001). It would not be until Powell was in college that he discovered his talents as he was extremely successful in the ROTC program (2001). He graduated  in 1958 as a cadet colonel (2001). Powell married Alma Vivian Johnson and three offspring were produced from that union ("Powell," 2001). He  went to Vietnam, where he was wounded in action, and finished second in his class after studying at the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth (2001). He went  on to receive a Masters degree in business administration in 1971 (2001). Powell was given a challenging task which was in 1973,  in South Korea, where he had to command a battalion that was difficult to handle; the battalion had been troubled by racial strife ("Powell," 2001). One would think that Powell,  because he is a minority, might be the one to turn things around. He did. He in fact lived up to the challenge and it perhaps has nothing to do  with his race, but rather with his expertise and leadership ability. In meeting the challenge, Powell explained that he got rid of  the "bums" and put the drug users in jail ("Powell," 2001). His formula included having everyone run four hours per day, a practice that tired the men so there were
