The concepts of western centralism and the peripheral in terms of literature which deals with the colonial aspect of British rule in
Africa and the Caribbean are exemplified in the works of both Chinua Achebe and Derek Walcott, both in their treatment of the ramifications of British cultural domination and the way
in which they employ a somewhat dualistic perspective to the socio-cultural situations which they describe in their work.
The centralism of the English literary tradition is something which by its very nature implies that there are other forms
of literature which, although derived from the centre, must be constituted as peripheral since they do not follow in a direct line from the conventions which are considered as integral
to the tradition. However, this in itself must be seen as denying the influence and interchange between the original and highly anglicised element prevalent in English literature prior to colonisation,
and the way in which the culture of literature has diversified in the light of the contributions made by those writers whose heritage is derived both from the English tradition
