Out of all of this has emerged one tool that has,  in many ways, generated some controversy. This tool is known as strategic information systems, or business process reengineering. The basis behind  BPR as we will term it is fairly straightforward. In its most basic sense, BPR involves the integration of business processes through technology in order to get rid of  redundancies, improve effectiveness, cut costs and help speed product time to market (Bacheldor and Zaino, 2003). BPR is also defined as "the process of identifying a portfolio of computer-based applications  that will assist an organization in executing its business plans and realizing its business goals" (Lederer and Sethi, 1992). While this concept  sounds very good on paper, many times BPR has been translated into "layoffs." It is assumed that one major downside to the BPR theory is that staff needs to  be cut in favor of new computer systems that can get the job done director and for less money. This paper will  analyze, from a managerial perspective, both the benefits and disadvantages of BPR. Like many tools used to increase a companys efficiency, BPR is neither a bad or good thing  -- and its effectiveness is measured by how well a corporation plans to use this. We touched on the benefits of BPR  somewhat above -- basically, when used correctly, BPR helps eliminate a lot of a companys waste.
