    often-fatal disease. As well, screening behavior has been found to be gravely deficient in some parts of the globe, effectively adding to the overall mortality rate. Speculation has  long surmised that the Middle East has not sufficiently maintained its knowledge base with regard to cancer, yet recent awareness consortiums and comprehensive clinics have been implemented at the forefront  of its fight against this indiscriminate killer. With so many varieties of cancer, it is quite difficult for the most affluent of countries to stay abreast of the recent medical  advances. Thus, the Middle East has long been considered less equipped to deal with the cancers that are more prevalent within its region. However, the Middle Eastern countries  have become aggressive in their quest to learn about proper screening, diagnosis and treatment as a means by which to stay informed along with the rest of the world.  One of the most important aspects of this movement is the Middle East Cancer Consortium (MECC), which grants small amounts of money to help support such comprehensive measures in addressing  and controlling cancer (Anonymous 2000). The grants will be utilized for funding of feasibility studies, initiating programs, as well as to supplement ongoing projects "in the wider scope of  cancer research" (Middle East Cancer Consortium Small Grants Program). Currently the Authorities of Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Jordan and Palestine are prepared to accept grant applications for residents of these  countries. Specific goals include: 1. Establishing regional cancer surveillance programs in the Middle East; 2. Providing funding for research projects in cancer; and 3. Exchanges  of clinicians and scientists between qualified laboratories or clinics (Middle East Cancer Consortium Small Grants Program). When it comes to promoting the
