Some forms  of cancer are treatable and the patient will go on to lead a normal life, particularly if caught early. Other cancers are difficult if not impossible to cure and often,  patients only live a matter of months or years. For example, most thyroid cancers grow slowly, but there is one type that rapidly spreads. Cancer comes in a variety of  types. The months preceding death for any cancer victim is often uncomfortable as the disease spreads and dependent upon treatment, can be very expensive. Everyone reacts to cancer differently. Some  fight it, and some succumb to it. There are patients who follow doctors orders and go through painful and uncomfortable treatments, while others explore alternative medicine, recognizing that mainstream medicine  is fighting a losing battle. Others prefer to do nothing and live their last days in relative comfort, or at least give up on trying to live longer. What cancer  does also is to awaken philosophical questions in all patients and their families. They all suddenly must deal with death. Everyone has to face death at one time or another,  but cancer often grows slowly and so there is time to linger and reflect and there are decisions to make.
