    beyond all doubt, that they are guilty. Because the criminal justice system requires only that people are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, and not beyond all doubt, there is  always room for error. Many death row inmates have been recently released due to new DNA evidence which had surfaced in the wake of technological innovations. But while such stories  are well received by the community,they become fodder for the many people who protest against the death penalty. On the other side are defenders of the statutes which uphold  the rule of law. The theory of deterrence is the strongest support for capital punishment. It speculates that by having a severe punishment, such as death, criminals will  be less inclined to commit crimes that carry the penalty. While studies have not yet proven its effectiveness, it is known that deterrence does have validity. Also, it is logical  to assume that one who premeditates a crime will think of the punishment they would have to endure if caught. The theory is that with the death penalty enforced, there  will be less capital crimes committed for fear of serious consequences. Deterrence is the same logic used in many other areas of life and in the criminology field itself. For  example, a parent might threaten to spank a child and the fear of the spanking would have a deterrent effect. Thus, the child would be more inclined to behave than  if no threat was made. This basic premise can be related to behavior in relation to larger crimes. II. Hypotheses In presenting a sociological research proposal on  capital punishment, and embracing the concept of deterrence, several hypotheses may be relevant. One hypothesis might indicate that there is a gap between the black and white population, as
