It did not take long before  the bootleggers had an audience for their Sunday afternoon races (The Earl, nd). When prohibition was repealed the bootleggers continued to race, mostly on the back roads in the South  (The Earl, nd). It was in the summer of 1938 when racing was organized by William H.G. "Bill" France who held a race in Daytona Beach, Florida, right on the  sands of the beach (The Earl, nd). Prizes were given to the winners, things like cigars, motor oil and rum (The Earl, nd). This was the official beginning of the  history of NASCAR (The Earl, nd). France was clever and astute and realized that an official organization was needed if stock car racing was to have any kind of future  (The Earl, nd). That organization needed to retain data, the statistics, the list of champions and lists of the record holders (The Earl, nd). The beginning of World War II  brought the fledgling endeavor to an abrupt halt (The Earl, nd). After the war, some of the drivers returned to Daytona to race again but the races were rather disorganized  (The Earl, nd). France was not going to give up his vision, though, and on December 12, 1947, France put together a meeting that was attended by number of different  promoters from various parts of the country (The Earl, nd). They worked for three days, during which time, they developed the rules for racing and other procedures and they named  the organization the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing - NASCAR was officially born (The Earl, nd).
